To carpet or not to carpet - that is the question?

We have carpet upstairs and wooden floors downstairs and with 5 kids and a chocolate labrador that is not a happy combination - so today on impulse I have taken up the landing carpet as a precursor to getting new (the Dh may not be best pleased as he feels stained carpet is better than no carpet) . George had a fab time wielding the hammer and Olivia had an impromptu lesson  on materials : we found - wood, metal, tiles, paint, paper and a ton of dust - What's in dust then Mum?" she asks and off we go down another winding path to learning.....
So the question now is -  to carpet or not to carpet - the floorboards are already sanded and looking rather shabby chic - guess another rug needs making.

  1. Oh, how funny. I do that kind of thing. Husband comes home from work and I have re-arranged the house. He used to be scared to go to the loo in case I moved the living room into the kitchen.

I would go with no carpet, much easier to keep clean.

  2. I am refinding my house rearranging skills now George is walking - I used to be a manic house rearranger too ! I am eyeing up the carpet in our bedroom now - the carpet shampoo experiment made it worse not better so I think it will have to go !!

  3. My house is tiled downstairs and wooden upstairs. With a shedding golden retriever, two indoor cats and now a baby, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Am worried about banged chins etc when baby starts to walk, but everyone else over here is in the same boat.

My husband is the one in our house who likes to move stuff around. Our whole downstairs furniture have changed places twice already this year... If he could rip out the kitchen and bathroom easily and move them around I think he would :)

  5. Brilliant! I would love to see his face! I once began painting all our woodwork in our old house. I knew my husband would say the white wasn't as practical as the pain wood, but I wanted it anyway! He was speechless when he came home.
We only have carpet in our bedroom and the children have even managed to make a mess of that.

  7. I have been spinning some Swaledale wool which gets used in carpets. I would offer to make you a stair carpet on my loom but if its the landing as well George might be at University before its done!
